Binnen het SHIFT project van Frank Bruggeman en de Hangar, is Lío Spinnewijn op zoek naar een alternatieve, wederkerige relatie en stem van maïs en mens in de hedendaagse voedselketen. In een zoektocht naar het terugvinden van de stem van maïs en mens, zal Lío bij de hangar onderzoeken of er een community based alternatief voor de monocrop mais is. Hen zal dit doen door op een strook van 4,5m breed b 100m lang maïs te gaan verbouwen. De plant zal hier niet als monocrop gezaaid worden maar worden vergezeld door bonen en pompoen. Deze drie planten staan ook wel bekend als de “three sisters.”
Binnen deze traditionele tuinbouw wordt alles met de hand gezaaid. Dit gebeurt vanuit de volgende gedachte; het ontstaan van maïs kan niet anders gebeuren dan door hulp van de mens. Maïs heeft namelijk een te dikke bescherming om de kolf heen zitten om zichzelf voort te planten. De mens moet ieder jaar de zaden van de kolf afhalen en het jaar erop in de grond stoppen. Hierdoor wordt ieder jaar de verbinding tussen mais en mens hernieuwd.
ik zie het als performance artist als uitdaging en performance om dit veld met de hand te beplanten. Zo veranderen we dat niet alleen de uitputting van de aarde gevraagd wordt om deze planten te laten groeien, maar wordt er ook uitputting van de mens verwacht. Een vorm van wederkerigheid tussen mais en mens om te mogen oogsten.
Within the SHIFT project by Frank Bruggeman and the Hangar, Lío Spinnewijn is searching for an alternative, reciprocal relationship and voice between corn and humans in the contemporary food chain. In an effort to rediscover the voice of both corn and humans, Lío will research at the Hangar whether a community-based alternative to monocrop corn is possible. They will do this by cultivating corn on a strip of land measuring 4.5 meters wide by 100 meters long. The plant will not be sown as a monocrop, but accompanied by beans and pumpkins. These three plants are also known as the “three sisters.”
In this traditional form of agriculture, everything is sown by hand. This is based on the understanding that corn can only come into being through the help of humans. Corn has a husk that is too thick for the cob to reproduce by itself. Each year, humans must remove the seeds from the cob and plant them in the soil for the next season. This annual act renews the connection between corn and humans.
As a performance artist, I see it as both a challenge and a performance to plant this field entirely by hand. This way, it is not only the exhaustion of the earth that is required for these plants to grow, but also the exhaustion of the human body. It becomes a form of reciprocity between corn and humans in order to be allowed to harvest.
