Carthographing is an intervention in which Maurice Meewisse connects what he found in the quarry into a monumental garden. For this project he invited Lío Spinnewijn, gardener and performer to form a situated partnership. In the granite wall one can find recent traces of drilling, cracks older than the last ice age, weird dents and ever changing marks made by groundwater seeping through. With brass strips Meewisse highlighted those traces so that the different temporalities get combined into one map, while introducing the new temporality of the brass slowly getting its patina. This mapping, as all mapping, is a subjective practice, highlighting some parts while ignoring others and at the same time physically and irreversible changing the wall itself. Another major find, is the life he found in the quarry. In the smallest cracks plants seem to find their way. Even though the plants are not welcomed in the quarry, they are very resilient and determined to live. With blocks of granite and some rubble from Chris Peterson, Meewisse made plant beds, that together with the water seeping through the wall, frame the brass drawing while at the same time welcoming life to the work and into the quarry. The beds all have their own unique quality, some are newly created and some only became one because something existing quality got enclosed. In this way, more and more temporalities and traces connect within the same intervention.
The fertile grounds of the plant beds form a space for the research of Spinnewijn. Their contribution to Carthographing is plant-based and resulted in a subarctic garden consisting of local pioneer species, hybrid species and cultivars from all over the world. This globalized garden connects the work to the world and questions the migration of plants, how these plants will continuously transform their new environment and how they will be transformed themselves.
